Elder Stories of the Kiillinikmiut Tuktuit: What Do the Caribou Need for Their Wellbeing?
This book is the result of three decades of collaboration between Inuit Elders, hunters, and scientists in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. Centered on the Kiillinikmiut Tuktuit—the Dolphin and Union caribou herd whose migrations between Victoria Island and the mainland have long sustained Arctic communities—it blends Inuit Knowledge and Western science to reveal how people, animals, and land are deeply connected through changing seasons, ice, and history. A celebration of collaboration and “two-eyed seeing,” it preserves the voices of Elders and enriches an understanding of Arctic life, culture, and resilience.
Contributing Elders: Jimmy Haniliak, George Angohiatok, Jorgan Aitoak, Bellarose Eyegetok, Bobby Algona, Peter Taktogon, Pat Ekpakohak, Jean Ekpakohak, Allen Joss, and David Kuptana
